Email

E-mail for short electronic mail means a way for composing, sending, receiving and storing messages over electronic communication systems. E-mail applies to both to the internet mail system based on the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) and to X.400 systems, and to intranet systems allowing users within one organization to e-mail each other. The internet protocols or X.400 protocols are used over Intranets for internal e-mail service supporting workgroup collaboration. E-mail is always used to deliver unsolicited messages like bulk or spam, but filter programs exist which can automatically delete some or most of these, depending on the situation.
E-mail origin
E-mail was in fact a crucial tool in creating the internet. MIT first demonstrated the Compatible Time-Sharing System (CTSS) in 1961. Multiple users were allowed to log onto the IBM 7094 from remote dial-up terminals and to store files online on disk. This new ability encouraged users to share information in new ways. In 1965 E-mail was started as a way for multiple users of a time-sharing mainframe computer to communicate. Although the exact history in murky, among the first systems to have such a facility were SDC’s Q32 and MIT’s CTSS.
In 1966, E-mail was extended to become a network e-mail, allowing users to pass messages between different computers. ARPANET computer network played an important role in the development of E-mail. There is one report that indicates experimental inter-system e-mail transfers on it shortly after its creation in 1969. The use of the @ sign was initiated by Ray Tomlinson to separate the names of the user and their machine in 1971. The ARPANET significantly increased the popularity of e-mail, and it became the killer app of the ARPANET.
Format of E-mail
The format of Internet e-mail is defined in RFC 2822 and a series of RFC’s. RFC 2045 through RFC 2049, collectively called Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension (MIME). Although as of July 13,2005 RFC 2822 is technically a proposed IETF standard and the MIME RFC’s are draft IETF standards, these documents are the de facto standards for the format of Internet e-mail.

There are two major sections of internet e-mail messages:
1.Header – structured into fields such as summary, sender, receiver, and other information about the e-mail.
2.Body – the message itself as unstructured text, sometimes containing a signature block at the end.
Uses of E-mail
1.In society.
Flaming – Flaming occurs when someone sends an angry messages. Many observers bemoan the rise of flaming in written communications. Typing a message to another person is an indirect interaction and people can write whatever things are running in their minds without hesitation.
2.In business
E-mail helped a lot in business development. Through e-mail businessman can send instant message to any part of the world and this will keep their privacy also. LAN based e-mail is also an emerging form of usage for business. It not only allows the business user to download mail when offline, it also provides the small business user to have multiple users email ID’s with just one email connection.
Disadvantages of E-mail
Spamming and computer viruses.
E-mail usefulness is being threatened by four phenomena: e-mail bombardment, spamming , phishing and e-mail worms.
These threats can also damage your system. These threats uses e-mail as a carrier.

Dynamic HTML

As the Internet continued to evolve, Web designers found this static quality
fairly limiting. They wanted to add dynamic content to their Web sites — that
is, content that could change once the user had already downloaded a
particular Web page. Dynamic HTML, or dHTML, is the term for the software
technology that makes this possible. DHTML content is actually produced by
using a number of complex scripting languages, such as Javascript, to
access something called the document object model on your Internet
browser. Basically, the document object model (DOM) controls everything

about how a browser displays a Web page. These days, almost all users have
browsers that will expose the DOM to scripting languages, so that this script
can alter HTML elements.

DHTML was not created with animation in mind, but it will let you alter HTML
elements in a way that will add movement to a Web page. A dHTML script
can simply tell the browser to keep changing the placement of a particular
image on the page, so it travels around the screen. If you do this with several
different images, you can move a series of graphic elements around each
other to make interesting movies.

HTML

HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language. It is the language used most often by and others to create web site pages. HTML tells your web browser how to read and display the text on the web page. The newer web designlanguages and style standards are based on HTML.

History of HTML Programming
HTML was originally created by a guy named Tim Berners-Lee as a way to communicate and share research information with his co-workers. At the time simply a set of tools, the more standardized version we are familiar with today became available in the mid 1990’s. Standards organizations are pushing forward with XHTML as a “successor” to HTML. XHTML is an XML based version of HTML.
Hypertext Markup Language or HTML has always been the basic language in developing a website. Although various automated software platforms have been introduced to simplify website creation.HTML remains of utmost importance in creating web pages. HTML primarily involves elements which have two properties – the attributes and content. Elements make use of label or tags which are of two types – start or open label and end or closing label. The attributes are those contained in the start label while the content is the one specified between the labels. Some elements, though, need no content as well as closing tag.
In HTML each tag has its own purpose and if you understand them well, you will learn to write HTML more easily. In simple terms, tags specify how a text should appear in a web page say, bold or italic, and they can also serve as a command in order to insert a photo, make links to other sites or insert a sound on a certain page.
Tags are not case – sensitive and usually come in pairs and are enclosed in with the ending tag having the / sign.

Firewall

Firewall is a very popular word, you have often heard it while using internet for any length of time and especially if you work at a larger company and browse the web while you were at work. Firewall is used to protect home network or office network or restricting family from offensive web sites and potential hackers.
Basically, a firewall is a barrier to keep destructive forces away from your property. And that’s why it is called a firewall. Its job is similar to a physical firewall that keeps a fire from spreading from one are to the next.
It is a hardware or software which filters the information coming through the internet connection into your private network or computer system. If an incoming packet of information is flagged by the filters, it is not allowed through.
Methods used by firewalls to control traffic flowing in and out of the network.
1.Packet filtering – Against a set of filters packets are analyzed. Packets that make it through the filters are sent to the requesting system and all others are discarded.
2.Proxy service – information from the internet is retrieved by the firewall and then sent to the requesting system and vice versa.
3.Stateful inspection – In this method certain key parts of the packets are compared to a database of trusted information.
Firewall protects us from:
1.Remote login – When someone is able to connect to your computer and control it in some form. Through this anybody can view or access your files which are on your computer.
2.
3.Application backdoors – Some programs have special features that allow for remote access. Others contain bugs that provide a backdoor, or hidden access, that provides some level of control of the program.
4.SMTP session hijacking – SMTP is the most common method of sending email over the internet. By gaining access to a list of e-mail addresses, a person can send unsolicited junk e-mail to thousand users. This is done quite often by redirecting the e-mail through the SMTP server of an unsuspecting host, making the actual sender of the spam difficult to trace.
5.Operating system bugs – Like applications, some operating systems have backdoors. Others provide remote access with insufficient security control or have bugs that an experienced hacker can take advantage of.
6.Denial of service – In this the hacker sends a request to the server to connect to it. When the server responds with an acknowledgement and tries to establish a session, it cannot find the system that made the request, a hacker causes the server to show to a crawl or eventually crash.
7.E-mail bombs – An e-mail bomb is usually a personal attack. Someone sends you the same e-mail hundreds or thousands of times until your e-mail system cannot accept any more messages.
8.Macros – Hackers have taken advantage of macros to create their own macros that, depending on the application, can destroy your data or crash your computer.
9.Viruses – A virus is a small program that can copy itself to other computers. This way it can spread quickly from one system to the next.
10.Spam – Spam are harmless but they are annoying, spam is the electronic equivalent of junk mail. It contains links to web sites.
